As you drive out of Anchorage you will come into the flats, in the fall and winter you will see the moose here and there munching on the willows that grow along with other vegetations. In the spring the flats will become filled with the sound of the returning geese along with some sand cranes and the occasional swan pair. Summer time finds the flats in bloom from the wild iris’s to the wild cotton.
As you keep driving North you will see in the distance the wonderful Mat-Su Valley. You can take the first exit that leads to Palmer or stay on the Glenn Hwy that turns into the Parks Hwy. and takes you to the City of Wasilla.
The City of Palmer was a Colonist town, you know you have arrived when you will still see bits of its history here and there from the old train depot in downtown to the buildings that have stood thru the ages and have been refurbished. In the summer the City has Friday Flings in downtown, it has everything from rides to good food to entertainment. They also have booths filled with crafts or plants for your garden.
Heading West out of Palmer you are headed towards Wasilla.
This city is much younger then Palmer but just as full of pride as its sister city. In the City of Wasilla you will be able to see some of its history on Main Street; the Dorothy Paige Museum has much information as does the Wasilla town site behind the public library. The city is just one stop on the rail system as you go North.
